A well-designed range hood should be able to improve air quality by removing heat, moisture, smells and grease from the cooking area in your kitchen. Using these tips for selecting a new range hood may help you to find a size and style, which works well for your kitchen design.

Choosing an Exhaust System

• Non-vented systems do not vent outdoors. Instead they filter and clean the air and the air is returned back into your kitchen. Typically, these systems may not perform as well as ducted exhaust systems, and they require more maintenance.
• Ducted exhaust systems vent outside through an exterior wall and are usually better at removing moisture and heat.

Air Flow
The air flow of the fan in a range hood is measured by cubic feet per minute (CFM). Essentially, this is the speed at which air is exhausted outdoors. The location of the hood, ductwork and size of the vent can all affect CFM, but it is generally recommended that you use an output of 300 CFM.

Noise Levels
Before purchasing a range hood, consider a higher powered blower, which can move air quicker and can be used on a lower setting to reduce noise levels. Designs that draw air at the edge of the hood may be quieter when running.

Sizing the Range Hood
To be effective, choose a hood, which covers the entire width of your stove top and at least half of the width of your front burners. Choosing the right size will help to ensure you get the maximum air movement.
