Like many people, you may not notice the hair and soap particles clogging up your shower drain until they have caused significant damage. Rather than use harsh chemicals that could damage your drain, you can use a homemade, two-ingredient cleaner to get rid of even the toughest clogs. It takes just three simple steps to get a clear drain. These include:
- Remove the plug from your shower drain if needed and then sprinkle baking soda over it.
- For the second step, pour about half a cup of white vinegar down the drain. Don't feel alarmed if you see it start to fizz and bubble. That means the mixture is breaking up the clog.
- Wait a few minutes before pouring hot water down the drain. Lastly, rinse away all the debris broken up by the baking soda and vinegar.
The next time you or someone else in the home takes a shower, the water should drain perfectly without causing any clogs. You won't have to put up with standing in ankle-deep water until the end of your shower.
How to Prevent Future Clogs
While these three steps are effective at eliminating clogs that have already happened, you can stop clogs from forming in the first place. Each time you get out of the shower and before you get in, scoop out the hair and soap scum from the drain and throw it away. If you don't want to touch it with your hands, put on a pair of plastic gloves or use a washcloth. Additionally, completing the above steps once a week or so will prevent major clogs in the future.
