Bottom mount refrigerators have recently become very popular, as opposed to the more traditional top-mounted units featuring a freezer on top and cool space below, or French door side-by-side freezer and cool space areas. When you visit an appliance store these days, you'll probably see all three of these types of refrigerators. So, why choose a bottom mount refrigerator? What are the advantages of this purchase versus the other styles and designs of fridges?
Ease of Reach
Units which have freezers on top require that everything else be stored in the lower compartments, and in the case of fruits and vegetables, that usually means in 'crisper' drawers situated at the very bottom of the fridge. This can be a problem or at least an inconvenience for many people, since it forces you to bend down to reach these items, and not everyone is young and flexible. Frozen foods are also the ones accessed less frequently, so it makes sense for the most commonly used food items to be stored within easy reach.
Space for Large Food Items
The configuration featuring side-by-side freezer and cooler areas is somewhat limiting in terms of the size of items being cooled and frozen, since each side only has a portion of the overall width. With the freezer on the bottom, larger items can be accommodated in both the freezer and the cooling area, because both have the full width of the refrigerator itself to store foods.
Greater Energy Efficiency
The older-style refrigerators which had cooling areas below the freezer are slightly less efficient than newer bottom-mounted types. Since warm air does rise, the warmer refrigerator air would rise into the freezer area, and make it work slightly harder to maintain freezing temperature. In a bottom-mounted setup, that can't happen because the freezer is on the bottom and the warmer air of the refrigerator above simply rises up to the ceiling above.
